If you’ve been struggling with seasonal allergies, chronic congestion, or inflammation, your body’s detox pathways might be the missing link. During our recent Healing Circle on Detox & Allergy Solutions, we explored how toxins can overload the immune system, making allergies worse—and most importantly, how to clear them out for good.
Why Detoxing Is Essential for Allergy Relief
Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances like pollen, dust, or certain foods. But what many people don’t realize is that toxins in the body can worsen and prolong this response. When the liver, gut, and lymphatic system are sluggish, allergens have a greater impact, triggering more inflammation and immune dysfunction.
Common signs your body may be struggling with toxin buildup include:
- Persistent seasonal allergies or increased sensitivity to allergens
- Brain fog, fatigue, or sluggishness
- Skin issues like eczema, rashes, or acne
- Digestive issues, such as bloating, constipation, or food sensitivities
- Increased inflammation and weakened immune function
By supporting detox pathways, you can help your body clear allergens more effectively, reduce inflammation, and breathe easier this season.
Key Detox Pathways & How to Support Them
✅ Gut & Colon: The colon is our final exit point to remove toxins and waste. When bowel movements aren’t frequent enough, toxins and waste can accumulate and reabsorb back into the body. This creates a breeding ground for inflammation, bacteria, & disease, leading to high LDL cholesterol, hormonal imbalances, chronic illness, and more.
Optimal elimination is 2-3 easy bowel movements per day. Your poop should typically look like a sausage or snake, smooth, and soft. It should not break apart when flushed or smell bad and you should barely need to wipe after.
Here are some ways to support your colon:
- Remove potential food triggers (ie ultra-processed foods, gluten, refined sugar, etc.) and replace with nourishing, whole, vegetable-dense meals
- Aim for at least 28 grams of fiber per day (we love flax seeds, chia seeds, avocado, and more!)
- Hydrate and prioritize minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and sodium
- Move daily with activities like walking, yoga, or stretching to encourage gut motility
- Practice belly breathing to stimulate the vagus nerve and improve digestion
✅ Liver: The liver is responsible for filtering toxins out of our blood and into our bile and stool for elimination. If our liver or bowels are sluggish, toxins can become stagnant and accumulate, which is a major contributor to inflammation and chronic illness. Optimal liver function supports hormone balance, metabolizes toxins, clears out allergens, and more!
Here are some ways to support your liver:
- Avoid ultra-processed foods and alcohol that overload the liver
- Drink warm lemon water in the morning
- Add turmeric, milk thistle, and dandelion to your diet
- Incorporate healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, and omega-3s
- Practice diaphragmatic breathing to enhance oxygenation
✅ Lymphatic System: The lymphatic system is responsible for moving toxins and immune waste out of the body. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump, so it relies on movement, hydration, and specific therapies to keep it flowing.
Here are some ways to support your lymphatic system:
- Dry brushing and lymphatic drainage massage to stimulate lymph flow and encourage toxin release. We love Align Massage + Lymphatics for all things lymphatic work in Austin, Texas!
- Engage in activities like rebounding, foot pumping, or walking to activate lymph movement
- Hydrate with at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily to flush out waste
- Add lymph-supporting foods to your diet like citrus fruits, leafy greens, garlic, ginger, berries, and pumpkin seeds
